Aegle

The most beautiful of all the Naiads, daughter of Zeus and Neaira. Charites are offsprings of hers and Helios. Naiads were nymphs of springs, streams, rivers and lakes. In the modern Greek language “aegle” means shine, fame, glory, radiance.

Doto

One of the fifty Nereids, daughters of Nereus and Dorida and one of the thirty-two (Nereids) who, according to Homer’s Iliad, came from the depths of the sea to the coast of Troas to mourn with Thetis the loss of Achilles’ son.

Gorgo

Known as Medusa, is one of the three Mermaids, daughter of Oceanus and Gaia. The word GORGO means “savage look” as with her gaze she terrified anyone who dared to look at her, except for Poseidon, the god of sea.

Thetis

Leader of the Nereids, daughter of Nereus, granddaughter of Oceanus and mother of the famous hero Achilles. The Nereids were worshiped as deities of calm seas and were very friendly to sailors and fishermen. The word “Nereida” comes from the word “nerti” which means “sea siphon”. The etymology of the name indicates the close connection with water.

Calypso

A nymph who lived on her own island, Ogygia, where she held Odysseus captive after the Trojan War for seven years before allowing him to return to his homeland of Ithaca, where his wife Penelope awaited him. Calypso lived in a cave at the entrance of which there were a garden, a sacred forest and many springs. She used to eat ambrosia, drink nectar and had the ability to make people immortal. Calypso means “to cover”, “to hide”, “to conceal”.

Prote

Island of Messinia in the Ionian Sea, located on the western coast of the Peloponnese. The island’s name comes from the ancient god of the sea Proteas, son of Poseidon.

Avra

A fast-moving nymph, excellent at hunting deer and roe deer. The word “ayra” denotes the cool breeze of the sea, but also the luminous energy that surrounds and encloses the body of every living organism.

Atlas

The mightiest of the Titans, was standing at the ends of the earth bearing the Firmament upon his shoulders. He had many children, mainly daughters better known as the Hesperides, the Hyades, the Pleiades and the Nymph Calypso.

Oceanus

Son of Uranus and Gaia, is the most ancient sea deity. MAGIATIKO (Greater Amberjack), takes its name from the month of May (in Greek), as it then approaches the shores of the Mediterranean Sea to hunt for its food and also breed.
